Hairstyles for bridesmaids and bride

The best hairstyles for bridesmaids are those that take relatively little time to do relative to the bride’s hair and don’t upstage the bride’s look. Bridesmaid hair styles should be elegant but not so attention grabbing that it offsets the intent of the bridesmaid’s dress, all of which is to make the bride stand out on her day. However, no bridesmaid wants dowdy ponytails or loose hair that can get in the way of the photos that will immortalize her and the bride that day.

Short Hair Hairstyles for Bridesmaids

The Pixie

The pixie look is when short hair is swirled and styled, usually held in place with a delicate hair band. You can style the hair either direction, so that it goes with the natural part and flow of your hair.

Low Up Do

Take the bridesmaid’s hair, style it back and then curl up the back in a wave-like curl up. This style works well for women with short hair. And unlike some other hairstyles, there is no need to trim everyone’s hair to the same length, just use differing amounts of hair spray and time with the curling iron.

The Goddess Braid

The goddess braid resembles a French braid except it is only done three quarters of the way down someone’s head. The last quarter or so of the hair hangs free. This allows it to fit women with short hair as long as there is enough to make the braid. A woman with relatively short hair can have a goddess braid and let the bottom quarter an inch or two below the scalp hang loose.

Low Ponytail

While a high ponytail is too childish for a wedding, a low ponytail with the hair pulled back sleekly is suitable for a bridesmaid. It is especially appropriate if the bridesmaids wear flowers in their hair or headbands.
Medium Hair Hairstyles for Bridesmaid

French Braid

A French braid is a good choice for someone with medium length hair. French braids are popular for bridesmaids because they can fit women with almost any hair length, from medium length to full length hair. Those with long hair can tuck the bottom portion of the braid underneath or wrap the braid around the French braid into a braided bun.

French Braid Chignon

French braid chignons create an elegant look for women with medium length hair, though it can be done with women with long hair. A French braid is done down each side of the bridesmaid’s head. Loose hair leftover is rolled up, twisted and pinned to the French braid. This elegant look provides a perfect opportunity to accessorize with flowers at the point where the leftover hair is pinned, if you don’t simply use a white or bridesmaid’s dress colored pin.

Dutch Braid

The Dutch braid is like a French braid except that the strands are pulled up from the bottom to the top. Dutch braids toward the side resemble the Katniss arena braid from “The Hunger Games”. Or you can do the Dutch braid straight down. Dutch braids can be done with short hair or long hair, and long hair can be pinned around the main Dutch braid to create a braided bun. This allows all of the brides’ maids of different hair lengths to all look the same.

Princess Braids

Princess braids are a good solution for bridesmaids with varying hair lengths. Each woman has delicate side braids made and pulled back before being braided together. The rest of the hair hangs loose, though it can be curled if you don’t want to let it lay naturally. Princess braids can be worn with natural bangs swept aside, or long bangs can be held in place with hairpins.

Double French Twists

Double French twists are an elegant style to hold up a bridesmaid’s hair while providing plenty of points for accessorizing. This hair style is appropriate for short to medium length hair. This hair style has the double feature of being suitable for both Caucasian and African American women.
Long Hair Styles Hairstyles for Bridesmaids

A chignon set of braids creates a similar look among all the bridesmaids, regardless of their hair length. For those who have very long hair, use a twisted chignon to take up the length to create a uniform shoulder length braid for all of the bridesmaids.

Braided Bun

Long hair can be braided and then wrapped in a bun on the back of the head, held in place by hair pins. This style works well when a woman has medium or long hair. It can be complemented by bridesmaids with short hair who have their hair put in a short bun, which may be complemented by a bun riser on the top of the head.

Halo Braid

You can give your bridesmaids halo braids instead of headbands, so that their hair is out of their face while framing it neatly. The rest of the hair can hang naturally down their backs, regardless of hair length.

Cascading Curls

Cascading curls are a lovely bridesmaid hairstyle for women with long hair, and it is a perfect choice for women with naturally curly hair. Women with shorter hair can have it styled with a curling iron, wear hair extensions or have their own hair pulled back while they wear garlands or jewelry that mimics the look.
